Creative isn’t something you become

Creativity is a process you learn to develop over time. Creativity is not something that can be taught but it is something that can be awakened. If you believe creativity is a state of being, something people have or not, something you must be empowered to flip on. You’re much more likely to accept excuses for why you are not or cannot do things. We never use our creative potential to the fullest because of fears, insecurities, and wrong choices. True creativity says: if others won’t let us do things one way, so we’ll try another.

Creativity starts when you realize who you really are or when you don’t want to get stuck in your routine anymore or when you love what you do, because it encourages your self-expression and involves constant brainstorming and searches of the genuine path. What if it’s just your perception that creativity is a switch or something to become or a state to achieve? How we might change the perception of creativity as being something you don’t turn off or on and instead of being something that you develop as a genuine skill? Something that can work around many constraints and a skill that gets better over time!

Creativity, it is the ability to think of ideas that are both valuable and noble. It is a skill anyone can learn. Much like science, math, writing, or a foreign language. I remember thinking I’d never be able to do math, even of the basics. I grew up thinking math was something you were either good at or not. I watched in school students who excelled at math breezed past problems I could hardly understand. But over time I learned math is a learnable skill, it was just the ways I was being taught that weren’t right for me. Sometimes you have to become your own teacher and apprentice. I found “tricks” for solving problems and visual approaches that aligned more with my way of thinking. I learned when the terminology and labels were required and when they were just for show. I learned how to break the questions down into manageable chunks rather than trying to solve large problems at once. And I realized how important it is to approach a problem with confidence, without which the mind wouldn’t even begin to view a problem as something one could even solve. The same attributes are all true for creativity.

Creativity is a skill that can be learned by anyone and developed over time. For it requires learning small tricks for utilizing them, flipping a problem around, changing the perspective or even asking silly questions, finding a partner, or any of the other hundreds of tricks you think of. Developing creativity also requires a clear perspective of what it is and what it isn’t, and how it differs from imagination or innovation. If one wants to develop their creativity they must improve their confidence of doing so. Without which it won’t matter how capable you are, you’ll find your mind simply not even wanting to try. Creativity is a skill like any other, it’s what you can always develop and improve. It’s not a switch to be turned on or a trait you’re either born with or without. When you realize this, many more options for how to utilize your creativity become apparent.

When I was a kid, I felt that being good art or music is the only way of being creative. Eventually, you realise that being creative is what you what to be in your own way and yes specific skills to take time to master but at the end of the day, it might be what makes you happy.
